Robert Wood Headshot

Robert Wood, CMB

The thing that sets Mountainwood Homes apart is that we care. That’s what makes it work. There are companies that don’t.

About

Robert was born and raised in the construction trades, following along in his father’s footsteps as a general contractor. Watching his father build a successful career in their hometown of Pendleton, Oregon, showed Robert that hard work, doing the right thing, and producing quality results can create a loyal following and legacy in the community. His small-town roots forced him to learn all aspects of the construction industry from age 12 – from being a laborer and framer in residential, commercial, and industrial areas. He put himself through college doing construction work as he obtained a Civil Engineering degree from Washington State University. Since then, he has managed large production and multifamily homebuilding companies with the volume of over 300 starts a year, built over 8,000 new houses, and participated in award-winning Street of Dreams show homes. His 40-year career and experience in value engineering address all aspects of the building lifecycle.

When he moved to Portland early on in his career, he saw how other construction companies were run and was motivated by their vision and plan.

“I heard a company say how many homes they were going to build that year, and it always stuck in my mind. I thought, ‘They have a plan to get that done.’ That’s the fun part of our business – somebody in the company knows how many leads we need and how much lumber to order. I don’t see that in a lot of construction companies, but to be successful, you have to follow some kind of plan, and we’ve done that at Mountainwood Homes.”

In 2008, Robert and his wife, Heather, started Mountainwood Homes with the motto “Building Clients for Life.” They built a business that combines their love of great design, exceptional craftsmanship, and doing what’s right for the clients. While it is a residential design/build company, it’s a customer service company. From day one, the focus has been on creating an exceptional customer experience and assembling a talented team to guide clients through each step.

Robert values continual improvement and collaborating with other like-minded people. He has participated in a NAHB Builder 20 Club for nearly a decade. These groups bring builders and remodelers from non-competing markets together several times a year to share their business expertise, learning from each other how to improve operations and performance.

To stay connected to the building industry and his peers, he served on the Board of Directors and was President of the Home Building Association of Greater Portland in 2023. He’s also been on the Board of Directors and President of Habitat for Humanity Willamette West, various church leadership positions, and an Eagle Scout Leader, combining his love for the outdoors with strong leadership skills.

Robert describes himself as driven, patient, and not afraid of the grind and getting dirty. He doesn’t give up easily. While he loves meeting people and the thrill of the win, he describes his current role in the company as acting as the “long-term vision and short-term throttle.” From big vision to small detail, he cares about all aspects of the business, team, and clients.

When he’s not at the office, Robert can be found outside hunting, fishing, hiking, riding 4x4s, or hanging out with his wife, kids, and grandkids.

Fun Facts

  • He competed in the Pendleton Round-Up in wild cow milking (there’s no belt buckle to show for it, but plenty of scars to prove it)
  • His favorite place is the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains
  • Growing up, Robert’s parents said he told them he wanted to be a ‘used car salesman. “I wanted to drive all the cars.” (Owning a 911 Turbo S Porsche is on the bucket list)
